Father's Day Reflection

May 27, 2018

Father’s Day is approaching quickly.  As I think of Father’s Day and the celebration built around it, I am reminded of my responsibilities as a father.  Not only the responsibilities to care for, protect and provide for my family in a physical and emotional way, but in the way that has a lasting impact for generations to come. The most important way I can care, protect and provide for my children is to introduce my children to Christ and help them learn to be dependent up on Him in all things for the duration of their lives.

Deuteronomy 6:4-9 is called by the “Shema”. The word “Shema” means to hear or to listen with the intention to do. It reads. “Hear, O Israel! The Lord is our God, the Lord is one! 5 You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. 6 These words, which I am commanding you today, shall be on your heart. 7 You shall teach them diligently to your sons and shall talk of them when you sit in your house and when you walk by the way and when you lie down and when you rise up. 8 You shall bind them as a sign on your hand and they shall be as frontals on your forehead. 9 You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.

”God’s words are more than instructive. They are word’s coming from a Loving Father who gives us the invitation to love Him back. His instructions are always for the purpose of protecting us from harm and consequence; and they provide for us the best life that He desires us to have.

As a father, I want my children to have the best life possible. I know that my children learn from me what I consider the most important in life by watching my life. What I spend the most time pursuing they will precieve me seeing as the most important. Most likely they will adopt the same for they lives. I’ve got to be careful. I will be held responsible to the Lord.

I would encourage every father to take the words of the Shema to heart and make the most of every opportunity to teach their children how to love Christ with all their heart, soul and might. Take the time to be diligent to talk about the Lord at home, when you are traveling from point “A” to point “B”, when you get up in the morning and when you lie down at night. Make efforts to place His Words around you so that you can point at them on a regular basis. Never forget the Lord, His Goodness and His Loving kindness.

As men we are called to represent Christ in this world. Representing Him starts in the home. Do all for the glory of Christ.

God bless and keep you in His way.

Brother Joey
