Proven Character

It is a proven fact that many Christians became Christians when they were children and many others when they were teenagers. It is no surprise to me that over the past twenty years we have seen an up-swing in distractions in the Christian realm designed to lead children and their families away from their commitment to church and Christ. This has become more and more evident on Sunday mornings, noted especially during Sunday School.

We are inundated by media on all sides, activities that occupy our time, sporting events that take us not only across town to the field or civic center; but take us traveling all over creation. All these endeavors and activities, while good and noble, might not just be serving as a distraction in our commitment to Christ. They may be serving the enemy by keeping some from coming to know Christ. I know some would say, “now Joey, don’t you think you’re being a bit extreme?” But I have no choice but to sound an alarm. I would encourage every believer everywhere to really pray about this concern.

I know there is a need for Christ to be represented on the courts, field, arenas, etc… but sometimes a stance for Christ is just that, A STAND FOR CHRIST. Let me give you an example. I will not use this individual’s name, but she had a difficult choice to make in the past few weeks. Her team was advancing to the next level of play and there was a mandatory practice that conflicted with a commitment to Christ she already made. This choice was difficult. If she did not go to practice, she did not play in the game her team was looking forward to play to advance further. She made her decision and went with her commitment to Christ. This is a result of relationship with Christ that began when she was a child and matured to the point she knew what Christ would have her do.

Her example reminded me of a phrase I’ve heard in a variety of ways. That phrase is “Anything that matters more to you than Christ is an idol.” She chose to acknowledge Christ in all of her ways, even the most difficult ways, and I know the Lord has been blessed and she will be blessed.

Psalms 1:1-3 says, “How blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked, Nor stand in the path of sinners, Nor sit in the seat of scoffers! 2 But his delight is in the law of the Lord, And in His law he meditates day and night. 3 He will be like a tree firmly planted by streams of water, Which yields its fruit in its season And its leaf does not wither; And in whatever he does, he prospers.”

“Character is not made in a crisis; it’s only exhibited.”

May Christ Dwell in You Richly!

Brother Joey
