Rats in the Cellar
What a wonderful day to be in the House of the Lord. It was a glorious Sunday worship here at Northeast. We were blessed with the music of Holy Spirit You Are Welcome Here. Yes, yes He is!
You’ve heard of bats in your belfries and skeletons in your closets, but Pastor Joey’s sermon this morning was about “Rats in the Cellar”; Things that hide in the darkness and scatter and run in the light. Our text was from Ephesians 2:1-10. Sometimes situations in life catch us off guard and hit us blindsided. We react/overreact in a manner unbecoming of our Christian life style. Looking at Ephesian’s 2, verse 1, we are reminded that as Christians we are dead in our trespasses and sins. The old life no longer holds us captive. The prince of the power of the air no longer enslaves us. But God, who is merciful to us, loved us so much that He gave us a new life in Christ. We did nothing of our own to receive this love. God has loved us from the beginning. Verse 6 reminds us that God’s love, through Christ, has raised us up to be with Him. God, who made us, created us for good works in Christ, and had this all prepared for us beforehand, so that we would be able to walk in them. An example of these past behaviors coming through is displayed in 1 Samuel 4:6, when Samuel came before the camp, and they needed something to help them win the battle. They brought the Ark of the Covenant into the center of the camp. In the past the Ark had brought them victory. The only thing is they did this on their own, without God’s instructions to so do. This did not prove profitable for the Israelites. Other incidents followed that opened the eyes of the Israelites. When these “surprising events” are exposed, we must rush to the light of Christ and not rely on the darkness of the world. What are our rats? Sulking; snapping at someone; snubbing others because we are mad at them; storming off in a huff…the list goes on and on. To avoid these we must remember the battle belongs to the Lord and let Him have control of it.
