Let 'em Have It
What a beautiful day to be in the House of the Lord. It was a glorious Sunday worship here at Northeast. The music today was just beautiful!
Pastor Joey spoke from the Book of Jonah today. Jonah was called by God to take His message of repentance to Nineveh, but Jonah didn’t think they deserved God’s message and decided he would take a trip in the opposite direction. Instead of taking the 500 mile trip to Nineveh, he fled (or started to flee) 2000 miles in the direction of Tarshish. So he left the port city of Joppa and boarded a boat to Tarshish (so instead of going from Israel to Iraq, he was going from Israel to Spain). While on the boat, a terrible storm came up and the sailors were scared. They decided to cast lots to see who caused the storm, and you guessed it, it fell on Jonah. Since he had told them he was fleeing from God, they asked him what they should do, and he told them to toss him over. Reluctantly, and after trying other options, they finally threw him over. You know the story from here: the storm called and Jonah was swimming when a big fish swallowed him. In the pit of the fish, in the pit of despair, after three days Jonah cries out to God and repents and promises to go to Nineveh. Once out of the fish, he goes to Nineveh and takes God’s message of destruction to them unless they repent. Not wanting his city to be destroyed, the king declares fasting and praying to Jonah’s God to be spared, which God grants. This did not make Jonah happy, so he goes off and pouts. In a conversation at the end of Jonah, God explains that just like Jonah cared for a plant that provided shade, God cared for the 120,000 people of Nineveh. Has God called you to go to a “Nineveh” but instead you headed for a “Tarshish?” Do you need to turn around before you end up in the belly of a giant fish and share God’s word? He will give you a do over.
